I started the Grandmothers Series to relive memories of my late grandmother and to better understand her experience of raising me. Visually, I was most interested in conveying the unique moments of tenderness that happen between grandmothers and their grandkids.
For each woman I photographed, for this series, the second part of their lives has been a time of new beginnings and wonders. What has been most special for me when working with them has been the opportunity to see very different family and cultural worlds, and yet also see the universality of grandmothers. I’m incredibly grateful to these families for welcoming me into their homes and allowing me to witness a slice of their family lives.
