The California fire survivors I met working on NBC News story “What California families saved before wildfires destroyed their homes” were homeowners and renters, both longtime and recent, from Altadena and Pacific Palisades. They all thought they would have a home to return to when they took the few belongings they could and ran for their lives on Tuesday, January 7. It’s difficult to put into words the deeply moving experience of meeting these five beautiful, gentle, inspiring, creative families at what is likely the hardest moment of their lives. Several people in the story told me that our meetings had been therapeutic for them, a step towards saying goodbye to their homes and feeling seen.
