When I arrived, community members were scattered around the ranch sifting through the rubble left by the Eaton fire. This was their last chance to recover items before the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers were to clear the burned structures on the property. The scene reminded me of photographer Sebastião Salgado’s work in the Serra Pelada gold mine in Brazil in the 1980s — people like ants dotting the slopes, covered in sweat, working in a kind of symphony, swallowed up by the cavities of the landscape.
